Physiotherapy Session

Soft Tissue Therapy in Tiverton

Soft tissue therapy is more than a massage. Each session starts with an assessment of your muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Then I use targeted hands-on techniques to ease pain, restore movement and help your body recover.

I'm a Level 5 BTEC qualified soft tissue therapist, working from a private treatment room in Tiverton.

What is soft tissue therapy?

Soft tissue therapy is the assessment and treatment of the body's soft tissues: muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Level 5 training goes beyond massage. It covers clinical assessment, an understanding of injury and pain, and a wider range of treatment techniques. Treatment is tailored to you, whether or not you play sport.

Understanding pain

Pain is your body's alarm system, and it doesn't always match the amount of damage. With long-term pain, the alarm can become oversensitive, but it can also settle with the right approach. Read more on my Chronic Pain page.

How soft tissue therapy helps with pain

  • Calms the nervous system. Skilled, comfortable touch can reduce sensitivity and help muscles relax.

  • Restores confidence in movement. Easing stiffness makes it easier and less worrying to move again.

  • Explains what's going on. Understanding your pain can reduce fear and help you take back control.

  • Builds a plan with you. Simple exercises, pacing and gradual increases in activity help keep improvements going.

  • I don't just treat the sore spot. I look at the whole picture, including your sleep, stress, activity and goals.

How soft tissue therapy works with your nervous system

Soft tissue therapy doesn't just work on muscles. It works with your nervous system, the body's messaging network that links your skin, muscles and brain.

  • Touch sends messages. When I work on your muscles, sensors in your skin and tissues send signals up to your brain.

  • Your brain decides what to do. It weighs up all the information it gets. If it senses danger, it tightens muscles and creates pain to protect you. If it senses safety, it can let go.

  • Comfortable touch can turn down pain. Pleasant touch signals travel alongside pain signals and can help quieten them, a bit like rubbing a knocked elbow.

  • It helps switch you into "rest and repair" mode. Calm, skilled touch can slow your breathing and heart rate and help muscles relax. This moves your body away from "fight or flight".

  • It refreshes your brain's map of your body. Pain and stiffness can make an area feel blurry or guarded. Touch and movement help your brain sense it clearly again.

  • Over time, a sensitive system can settle. Regular treatment, plus movement and good advice, helps your nervous system learn that it's safe to move without pain.

  • In short, I'm not just working on tight muscles. I'm helping your nervous system feel safe, so your body can relax, ease pain and move more freely.

Who can it help?

  • Aches, tightness or stiffness in the neck, shoulders, back or hips

  • Sports and overuse injuries

  • Recovery after an injury or operation

  • Long-term or persistent pain

  • Posture-related or desk-work tension

  • Reduced movement or flexibility

  • Osteoarthritis. Hands-on work and gentle movement to ease stiff, achy joints and keep you moving.

  •

Safe, evidence-based care

  • Every first appointment includes a health check to make sure treatment is safe and right for you.

  • If anything needs a GP or another professional, I'll tell you and help you get the right support.

  • My treatment is based on current research, not fads.

What happens in a session?

  1. Consultation. We talk through your health history, your symptoms and what you'd like to achieve.

  2. Assessment. I look at your posture and movement and test specific areas to find what's causing the problem.

  3. Treatment. I use techniques chosen for you, which may include:

    • Deep tissue and remedial massage

    • Soft tissue release

    • Muscle energy techniques (MET)

    • Myofascial release

    • Trigger point therapy

    • Positional release: gently placing a sore muscle in a comfortable position so it can let go

    • Breathwork: simple breathing to help your body relax and calm pain

  4. Movement and rehab. I give you exercises and movement tailored to your goals, building strength and confidence step by step, so the benefits last beyond the treatment room.

Soft tissue therapy or sports massage?

Sports massage is ideal for maintenance and recovery around training. Soft tissue therapy is a good choice if you have a specific problem, pain or injury that needs assessing and treating. Not sure which is right for you? Just book, and I'll tailor the session to what you need.
